Bluebella x Nubian Skin

Written by - Bluebella

Our hosiery collection got a sleek, skin tone-inclusive upgrade with the help of market leaders in diverse lingerie Nubian Skin, bringing you two new and gorgeous colour variations: Berry and Caramel. We sat down to chat with Nubian Skin founder, Ade Hassan, to learn more about her business, inspirations and tips for budding female entrepreneurs.

When did you first get your idea to start the business?

I came up with the idea for Nubian Skin in the spring of 2011. I was working in consulting at the time, but I knew that I really wanted to start a business and had been running through a few ideas. Then out of the blue, the idea for Nubian Skin popped into my head, and I knew it was the one. It was a problem that I faced, and I knew so many other women had the same problem of not being able to find nude lingerie or hosiery. I didn't launch the business until autumn 2014, so it took over three years from conception to execution.

Have you always been a fan of lingerie? Where do you draw your inspiration from?

I actually used to hate bras because I found them so uncomfortable. Once I started learning more about bras, I had my first proper fitting, and I realised the reason I didn't like bras and found them uncomfortable was because I was wearing the wrong size! Once I got put into a bra that was the right size, it was a complete transformation. I loved the way I felt supported and I actually felt comfortable in my bras. With regards to inspiration, a lot of what I've created are simple, classic pieces that I've always wanted but couldn't find. As the business develops and we start to look at more design-led collections, it's really all about the Nubian Skin woman. What does she love? Where does she travel? What is her lifestyle?

Who were your role models growing up?

Definitely my parents, and especially my mum. They're both entrepreneurs, and I've always admired their vision, success and grit.

Running a business must take its toll, what keeps you motivated in your everyday life?

I have a picture of my husband and a picture of my grinning baby on my desk. When things feel a bit bleak or overwhelming, I can't help but smile when I see my baby's face beaming up at me. It helps give me a bit of perspective.

What advice do you have for budding female entrepreneurs?

Believe in yourself, and don't be afraid to do something different or make a move that feels scary, exciting or uncomfortable.
